Group Collections Moved From the Field to the Phone

Digitising joint-liability group repayment for a multi-state microfinance institution without dismantling the group model that makes the credit work.

The Challenge

In a joint liability group model, repayment is not an individual event.

It is a scheduled, physical, collective one. A field officer travels to a centre, assembles the group, collects from each member and reconciles the total against the group obligation. That cost is fixed regardless of value collected and recurs every cycle for the life of every loan.

Digital collection has historically failed in microfinance because individual payment links dissolve the group into unrelated transactions and the institution loses the very structure that makes the credit work.

What Netwin Built

The solution is a vernacular Android application delivered as a single cross-platform build, integrated with the institution’s core systems and its payment partners. Credit decisioning, origination and scoring remain within the institution’s own systems.

What was delivered is the channel, and in microfinance the channel is where the cost sits.

Group repayment core

The customer sees every group member, all selected by default, deselects if needed, watches the payable total recompute, passes two explicit confirmation gates on any partial payment, then settles through their own UPI app.

Daily utility layer

Twenty-four bill payment categories turn a fortnightly app into a daily habit. Utility earns the install, the install serves the collection.

Self-service acquisition tier

Non-borrowers complete full onboarding and device binding, then receive a walled set of bill payment services only. The restriction is the point.

Branch officer bridge

The app surfaces the customer's own assigned branch manager, one tap to call, one tap to navigate. The digital layer reinforces the assisted channel.

What the Bank Gained

The group model that makes the credit possible is the same model that makes servicing it expensive. Most digital collection attempts resolve that tension by discarding the group. This solution took the opposite path, moving the collection event onto the customer’s device while keeping joint liability intact, visible and confirmable, and surrounding it with enough everyday utility to ensure the channel is present when the repayment date arrives.
